Networked Enterprise ERA

Pierfranco Ferronato has been invited as an Expert to the ERA
Coordination Initiative in the field of Networked Enterprise Workshop
about “Setting up a regional ERA coordination initiative in the area of
Digital Business Ecosystems” in Bruxelles the 15th of April 2008.

The interest in the area of Digital Business Ecosystems goes beyond its
research and technical aspects. DBE is currently viewed as a methodology
and approach (supported by IT) for making emerge the self-organising
endogenous economic processes among networks / clusters of small
economic actors, mainly SMEs, which operate at regional and local level.
Consequently, the DBE area is more and more considered as a distinctive
key policy instrument focused on supporting the regional and local
economic development (both for regions and countries) rather than a mere
			ICT research area.

Therefore, there is a need to bring together the relevant regional
authorities in the EU Member States in order to reach a consensus on the
evolution of the DBE concept and the new challenges and opportunities
that provides for regional innovation and economic development.
Deficiencies in Europe's regional research and innovation policies can
only be addressed positively if co-ordination at regional and local
level is established through notably an ERA co-ordination action.

one of the deliverable associated with the work of Soluta.Net about the specification of a MDA based language for modelling services
("SDL specification for the DBE Platform") has received a very positive comment:
"This is an excellent deliverable; the MDA orientation of the service design aspects in DBE produced a coherent view and a valid set of potential standards,
like the SDL described in this deliverable. The validity of this work spans largely beyond the field of DBE and has application throughout the whole web service industry."

Soluta.Net has been interviewed and cited by Diego Lo Giudice in the very recent Forrest report about MDA 'The State Of Model-Driven Development'".
Soluta.Net is the only Italian Software Integrator that was cited in the article.
Summary:
"Forrester expects model-driven development (MDD) to play a key role in the future of software development;
it is a promising technique for helping application development managers address growing business complexity and demand.
However, as in all early stages, there is still a lot of confusion about what MDD really is, what role standards like MDA play,
what the real benefits and challenges are, and how vendors are promoting their MDD offerings.
We interviewed various industry players and end users to get an update on the state of MDD.
We found that while it's still in its infancy, organizations are gaining real benefits,
tools are getting better, vendors are showing commitment, and MDA is being used in various ways.
However, not all MDD approaches are suitable for all organizations,
and application development professionals need to clearly understand the differences between modeling, between the various approaches to MDD, and when to move from one to the other."

Pierfranco Ferronato has been invited to join the Cutter Consortium as a Senior Consultant in EA (Enterprise Architecture).
Cutter offers a different value proposition than other IT research firms; clients -- who are *users* of technology -- get practitioners’ points of view, derived from hands-on experience with the same critical issues corporate and institutional IT professionals are facing, not the perspective of a desk-bound analyst who can only make predictions and observations on what’s happening in the marketplace.
Cutter partners with consultants are experts in their field.
More than 100 internationally recognized experts provide the content, consulting and training to its clients.
Cutter has about 5,000 clients worldwide, mostly IT management in large firms, of which about 40% reside outside N. America.
These experts are committed to delivering top-level, critical, and objective advice.

Dr. Pierfranco Ferronato has been invited to give a presentation at the second OMG annual workshop "SOA, MDA and Web
Services: Integrating the Enterprise, and Beyond" in Washington, DC, from March 27 to 30, 2006.
Session Abstract:
"SOA has been designed and envisioned for inside Enterprise integration as a mean to bridge systems and to create a governance layer on top of existing platforms as either legacy or assents. Now the industry is heavily moving to B2B environments where the parties are not single department applications but rather Enterprises.
Inside Enterprises there is administration ability of the SOA infrastructure, ability to handle the network, gain control over resources and IP, everything is reasonably under control. Between enterprise this is not true any more, IPs may change, protocols are subject to be replaces without notice, UDDI needs to be shared among parties, UDDI becomes vital for indexing and discovering services and , models need to change at a pace which is faster than any ability to maintains coherence and harmonization via a coordination process. The entire B2B becomes a very loosely coupled community which brings news challenges in SOA architecture: dealing with this reality requires to re-think of the founding principles and and technology of SOA.
This talk will address these and other issues for next generation of projects that are already ingoing. The presentation will delve into the issue, tackling SOA and proposing new techniques borrowing concepts from real industrial and research projects that are currently under development and that the speaker is leading as an Enterprise Architect. He will describe P2P based approaches for service registry, decentralized model repositories, scale free network and refers to cutting edge technologies in the Business Ecosystem arena."

JunoMDA, we recall, is a Soluta.net initiative, it consists of a Platform Independent UML profile and an AndroMDA cartridge for generating a php web application. Many features will be added to it namely, a better installation process and extension to the profile for addressing user authentication, news, image and file management.
We are proud of this decision and hope you can take advantage of it.

JunoMDA Project Announce

Soluta.net announces the JunoMDA(tm) project: "when design is more important then code".
In the recent months- for our internal use- we have been developing an MDA solution for generating php applications from UML models. We have decided to donate this project to the Open Source community: it will be soon hosted in Sourceforge.

The JunoMDA(tm) project consists of:
1- an UML profile
2- a PHP AndroMDA Cartridge

How does it work?
An UML Platform Independent Model of the target application is annotated with the PIM profile and the AndroMDA Cartridge generates an entire and complete php web based application. The generator takes care of creating the tTier, the eTier, the wTier and the uTier: the architectural style adopted is Component Based Development (Herzum and Sims). At the moment the uTier generates HTML and we are planning to make use of a template based presentation technology. Moreover JunoMDA(tm) creates all the infrastructure files, SQL scripts for table creation, configuration files, directories and all the descriptors needed by PHP and mySQL. JunoMDA(TM) generates a ready to be used application not a PHP class model: it is a full features web application. After the engine has terminated, is it readily runnable!
The UML Profile enables the generator to properly produce the application. It handles -for example- the relations between business data types, the generation of CRUDEL operations for managers and the proper layout for the uTier. The profile helps the generator to create the correct widgets in the uTier (combo, radio, checkbox, text field or buttons for creating the association).
JunoMDA(tm) adopts a regular MDA approach with a proper separation between PIM and PSM; even thought the PSM is not generated at the moment (we create the code instead), we are not using any PSM tag or stereotypes, hence being able to generated a java based application with no changes in the model: "Why code when we can model?"
Of course the PHP AndroMDA Cartridge can be replaced by a Java/JSP/HTTP one with a limited effort.
We are producing the documentation and a case study, shortly after we will upload it in Sourceforge and send an announce in the ML.
Meanwhile, if you have any question do not hesitate to contact us.

14 June, Oslo, Norway First International Workshop on Coordination and Adaptation Techniques for Software Entities (WCAT04)

P.Ferronato will present the paper: Pervasive Service Architecture for a Digital Business, co-authored with Thomas Heistracher, Thomas Kurz, Claudius Masuch, Miguel Vidal, Angelo Corallo, Gerard Briscoe, and Paolo Dini. In this paper it is presented ideas and architectural principles upon which we are basing the development of a distributed, open-source infrastructure that, in turn, will support the expression of business models, the dynamic composition of software services, and the optimisation of service chains through automatic self-organising and evolutionary algorithms derived from biology. The target users are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The collection of the infrastructure, the software services, and the SMEs is called a Digital Business Ecosystem (DBE)
